Deborah Baro, PhD

Professor, Principal Investigator

Dr. Baro obtained a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Illinois with a Biology major. She obtained her PhD in Molecular Biology and Human Genetics under the direction of Dr. Michael Cummings at the University of Illinois. In order to pursue her interest in neuroscience, she joined Dr. Ron Harris-Warrick’s lab at Cornell University as a Postdoctoral Fellow for two years. During this time her research focused on neuromodulation of a small neural circuit. She stayed on in the lab as a Research Associate for another seven years combining electrophysiological and molecular techniques in order to study neuromodulation of ion channels in single identified neurons. In 1998 she was recruited by Dr. Al Selverston to the Neuroscience Institute at the University of Puerto Rico as an Associate Professor. In 2001 she was recruited by Dr. Don Edwards to the Biology Department at Georgia State University as an Associate Professor. Dr. Baro is currently a Professor of Biology at Georgia State University and an Associate member of the Neuroscience Institute. In her spare time she initiates home improvement projects, many of which have yet to be completed.
