Grant Summary for the Center for the Study of Adult Literacy (CSAL): Developing Instructional Approaches Suited to the Cognitive and Motivational Needs for Struggling Adults
The purpose of the Center for the Study of Adult Literacy (CSAL) is to improve our understanding of ways to advance the reading skills of struggling adult learners reading at the 3rd to 8th grade levels. The Center will both conduct exploratory work on underlying cognitive and motivational processes that contribute to or impede reading development and develop and evaluate a multi-component reading intervention for this population. Read more…

Adult Cognition and Basic Literacy Research and Development Center Begins Its Work
According to the National Center for Education Research (NCER), the Center for the Study of Adult Literacy (CSAL) launched its ambitious program of work on September 1, 2012. CSAL is the first IES-sponsored research and development center focused on adult cognition and basic literacy. Housed at Georgia State University, CASL will conduct a range of research projects all centered on improving literacy instruction of low-skill adults. Its specific goals are to build a richer understanding of the underlying cognitive and motivational processes that contribute to or impede struggling adult readers’ development, to examine the adequacy of measurement instruments and assessments for them, and to develop and evaluate a multiple-component reading intervention for this population. Read more…

Funding for a five-year research center for adult education has been awarded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences (IES). Georgia State Awarded $10 Million Grant to Research and Advance Adult Literacy
ATLANTA – The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Georgia State University with a five-year $10 million grant to establish a new research center that will support research focusing on ways to improve adult literacy in the United States. The grant from the Institute of Education Sciences allows GSU to establish the Center for the Study of Adult Literacy, where researchers will study the underlying cognitive and motivational issues of adults who struggle with reading. Read more…

Poor literacy is often associated with poverty and can create intergenerational cycles furthering the ill effects of poor literacy on families and societies.
