How to be a successful online student

There are many benefits to taking online college courses. It allows you the flexibility to work on assignments at times that are convenient for you. It also saves you travel time to and from class. However, online courses can present several challenges that face-to-face classes do not. You do not see other students in class to ask questions or compare notes, and there is greater responsibility to manage your time wisely in order to complete the assignments on time. Here are a few pieces of advice that I feel are important to becoming a successful online student:

  1. Read the weekly objectives/tasks at the beginning of each week. This will allow you to identify the amount of time necessary to complete all assignments before their due date.
  2. Set your own deadline for assignments before the actual due date. By doing this, you will not fall behind in class and the quality of your work will be better since you will not be cramming last minute.
  3. Schedule a time and location each week to study and work on class material. Dedicating time and effort to an online course the same way you would face-to-face classes will drastically improve your chances for success as an online student.
