logo for heartbleed internet vulnerabilityIn case you missed it, there is a major security vulnerability in the underlying structure of how the internet handles user account passwords. It may sound like gibberish if I start talking about SSL, so here’s a link to a cartoon that will give you a simplified version of what’s going on with the Heartbleed bug. On the scale of bad things, this is “the Hindenberg crashing into the Titanic over the Alamo” bad.

At the moment, you may or may not be able to do anything to protect yourself either. Changing your passwords for the websites you access will do nothing for you if that site hasn’t been updated to protect against the vulnerability.

There is one bit of silver-lining to this huge problem – if you have yet to hear if a site you access has been updated, you can check for yourself using this site. All you have to do is enter the web address (URL) of your favorite site into the “Check a Site” field and click “See if this site is vulnerable to Heartbleed“. If the site is no longer vulnerable, change your password immediately.

We know this is a pain for everyone, but we do recommend safety first when it comes to your many online accounts. If you have any questions about this, don’t hesitate to contact us.
