Hodgepodge

This project was to get over your fears! That is, drawing ones of course. Our assignment was to set a timer and draw out what we are scared to draw (because we are afraid of messing up!) for about an hour. I am a perfectionist at heart and do not like to share anything that isn’t great so this was difficult for me. I liked reading art and fear because now I know I’m not alone in getting over my fears with art. People want to be perfect in their art but if you color in the lines, you don’t grow! Perfectionism is a flawed concept and it stops people from their deepest desires.  drawings below:

Dream Project

This is our last and my most favorite project in studio art. Our assignment was to create a sequential narrative and 3 drawings of atmosphere, 1 point and 2 point perspective of a dream we had in the past. My dream was set in Miami on a class field trip but most of it surrounds my friend and I. We start our journey descending into the Miami airport. The next scene is set on South Beach where we decide to go rollerskating. We stumble across an expensive store and find our roller skates that are priced at $600. We decide to borrow them and take them for a spin. However, we end up scuffing them and begin to freak out. Unfortunately we decide to take them instead of paying the price (we would never do that in real life!!!). We end up running away and hopping on a plane! And that’s the end of my story!

My process began once again with Pinterest looking up photos of Miami. I then found a bright color scheme to match my dream. The materials I used were notecards for the sequential narrative and watercolor pencils. I also used watercolor paper and pencils for my 1/2 point perspective. Lastly, I used a crow-quill pen and tan paper to finish the project. While this was the most time consuming project, it was definitely the most enjoyable!

Self Portrait Collage

This project was one of our first assignments of this course. Our task was to create a self portrait collage made from magazine clippings and glue them together to make a new you! I was inspired by pieces that represent me. I picked out clippings that had a more tropical and bright vibe such as the palms and flowers. On the right side of the face I did some watercolor. The largest photo is my finished product.

Natural Materials

For this project, our assignment was to be inspired by Andy Goldsworthy. He is an artist who creates art from natural materials outdoors. My process was to collect anything I found on the ground from my backyard and go from there. The materials I used were dead leaves and flowers, old branches and a fallen rose from my mother’s garden. I used the pink rose as the star of the show. Purple leaves encompass the flower to give it a nice contrast. In my project I liked combining old with the new. It was the beginning of spring time when I took these photos and to me it symbolized new life and new beginnings.

Compassion Project

This project was to provoke compassion in our audience for a cause we felt led to speak out on and make a change.

What makes your heart ache? Where do we need change? For me, I was led to speak up for animal abuse and rescue.

I first began my process simply writing things out that remind me of animal rescue and abuse. I set a timer and journaled until I had enough ideas compiled. Once I was finished, I would go on Pinterest and find images that would be appealing to my poster.

For poster 1, I interviewed a friend of mine in animal rescue. She inspired much of the work that went into this poster. My audience for  the poster was more leaned towards female students who are interested in volunteering and rescuing our furry friends, hence the pink and green colors. I first began painting the board green and painted 2 nightstands to promote symmetry. I thought it would give it a nice homey feel to have a clock, vase of flowers and a photo. It also shows how the dog is well loved and taken care of. I then used fabric for the bed and glued the pup underneath the fabric. I then painted a storm outside to symbolize how some animals are treated.

For poster 2, our assignment was to create another collage of a GSU initiative. I chose the Animal Defense Fund Organization that promotes animal rights. The materials I used for this piece was a poster board, painted cardboard for the dog house and colored pencils to draw the dreamy thought bubble. This poster was to show what many animals face every day; a house but not a home. A house that is filled with neglect. What animals do deserve is a home where they feel love and comfort.
