Netiquette Challenge

One fact I learned from completing the Netiquette Challenge is that threatening people, even through the internet, was illegal. I knew it would be illegal in person, but it’s actually pretty surprising for it to be illegal online too. Looking through social media, you might read people arguing back and forth and threatening each other, who knew that would be illegal. Also, the netiquette challenge stated that anything illegal on the street is also illegal in real life. This is a very interesting fact to have in mind.

Helpful Apps for College Students

  1. GroupMe: GroupMe is a very useful tool for college students. Basically, you create a group message with people without having to give out your phone number to people you don’t know all too well. Through GroupMe, you can attach links, pictures, and other content instantly. This app is very useful when you have a group assignment, or if you just want to get in touch with people from your class.
  2. Quizlet: Quizlet is a life savor when it comes to studying. Through the app, you can browse a “stack” of flashcards, or even create them on your own. What’s great about this app is that you can take your flashcards on the go wherever you are. Through the app, you just take a little time to create your flashcards, and study them in a variety of ways. Quizlet definitely makes studying a lot more efficient and easy.

Unit 2, Assignment 2: CRAAP Test

www.justfacts.com

  • Currency- The information from this website was not published recently. The posts on the main screen regarding gun control, abortion, education, etc. were all from research conducted at least one year ago. This website does, however, have the option to navigate to “Just Facts Daily”. This will directly send you to a part of the website that offers more current posts about a variety of topics. The site has been in operation since 1997.
  • Relevance- This website does go in depth on certain topics, and also gives readers a wide range of topics to choose from. The information it displays does pertain to the certain topic that you choose. This website allows people of all ages to understand the information presented.
  • Authority- Before each topic, the “Introductory Notes” will tell you where the information they used came from and when the research was conducted. Just Facts states on their site that they are a non-profit research and educational institute. There is not a direct phone number to call and contact this organization, but you can email any questions or concerns you may have.
  • Accuracy- The information on the website is accurate because they provide the links to where they received the information. As far as being bias, I didn’t seem to find any evidence to prove they are since they do provide sources from all the information they provide.
  • Purpose- The site states that their mission is “to research and publish verifiable facts about the leading public policy issues of our time.”

www.factcheck.org

  • Currency- The articles and posts on this site are from very recent times. The top headlines are all less than one month old. The site also seems to update quite frequently, as they do post just about everyday. This site was launched in December 2003.
  • Relevance- The site is very relevant if you were trying to look up something about politics. They have just about everything going on in the political world on this site. I feel like to understand a lot of these posts, you would have to have some knowledge on politics to understand.
  • Authority-  Before each article, it does tell you who wrote the article. Both the author and publisher are listed on the site. They also provide you with how they receive their funding and go in depth on who their staff are. This makes the site very credible.
  • Accuracy- The information given on this website is credible. They site any information they received from other news outlets that is used in the article. There really is not any obvious bias on the site considering they do cover just about all major and controversial issues.
  • Purpose- Factcheck stated on their website that they are a “nonpartisan, nonprofit consumer advocate for voters that aim to reduce the level of deception and confusion in US politics”.

  5. Chipotle Mexican Grill – Buckhead – Atlanta, GA – Yelp

The similarities that I found between all of the search engines is that all had multiple ads. For all of the search engines, you did have to scroll through a few ads to actually get to the content. Also, all of the search engines gave a lot of the same results. For example, all of the search engines gave the official site as it’s first result. Another similarity is that all search engines gave results that had the word “Chipotle” as the first word.

There really weren’t too many differences between the different search engines. One difference I did find was that google.com gave results from the news. This could be very relevant when searching different topics. The meta-search engines gave a lot of the same results. For example, excite.com gave two results back-to-back from yellowpages.

Tips on How to be a Successful Student

  1. Don’t procrastinate! I know that it’s really easy to forget about this class since all the work is online, but you still have to plan accordingly. What I normally do is create a checklist with things that I have to finish that week. It helps so that I’m not waiting until the last minute, and I won’t forget any assignments.
  2. Get to know other people in your class. With an online course, you don’t really think about the other students in your class. However, it is still important to get to know these people and establish contact. You never know when you’ll need their help with something.
  3. Check D2L & your email regularly. If any assignments are ever modified in an online class, it will be said through D2L or email. To make sure you receive these notifications, it’s vital that you check D2L and email frequently.

Assignment 3: Tool Inventory

  1. Task: You have to lead an online presentation on the contents of your history term paper. Tool: Prezi and YouTube Reason: You can make your presentation on Prezi using the components of your history paper. On YouTube, you can record yourself talking while presenting the paper, then upload it for everyone else to see.
  2. Task: The final exam for your economics course is coming up, and you need to collect all of your online resources for a study guide. Tool: Wikipedia and Email  Reason: Wikipedia provides multiple references for a given topic. With your friends, you can use email to send each other links that you have used throughout the course.
  3. Task: You need to create an interactive tour of Berlin as an assignment for your study abroad program. Tool: Prezi and Wordle Reason: Prezi and Wordle will allow you to input information about Berlin and turn it into a multimedia presentation. Within Prezi, you can also add any web links or images that need to be incorporated.
  4. Task: You and a group of your classmates have been asked to do a collaborative research project on how Facebook has affected the social habits of young adults. Tool: Instant Messaging (IM) and Wikipedia Reason: Using IM, you can interact with the rest of your group instantly, making communication very easy. Wikipedia can also help gather information used in the research project. Wikipedia provides multiple references that can help lead you to more information.
