Career Competency Profile

English 4320 Project

This assignment requires you to identify your career goals, your skills/competency, evidence of your competency, and areas of improvement needed. The purpose of this assignment is to help you figure out what type of position you should and can apply for when you graduate from our program, what is required for such a position, and what strengths and weaknesses you have.

Here’re the components of your profile:

Your Career Goals
In this section, clearly identify what your career goals are. By career goals, I’m not talking about your long-term career goals. Instead, think about a job position you can realistically apply for when you graduate from our program. This section should contain the position title as well as a short description of the typical job responsibilities. This description can be in a list format.

In thinking about the position title, be specific. This position title should be something you can find in job ads in our profession. Here’re some examples:

  • Copy writer (for a public relations firm)
  • Facebook ads specialist
  • Grant writer (for a non-profit organization)
  • Freelance newspaper columnist
  • Copyeditor for a magazine

Required Competency/Skills Set
Now that you have identified the specific job title you’re targeting, do some research to find out what skills/competency are required for such a position. This section should contain a list of the typical skills required for this type of position.

Your Competency/Skills Set
This section should contain a list of the skills you have that are relevant for such a position. For each skill you list, include your relevant credentials. For example, if you list “project management” as one of your skills, then you might want to list one or two projects where you had substantial management responsibilities.

Areas of Improvement
Check the “Required Competency” list against “Your Competency” list to see what areas you’re lacking in. List these areas and specify how you plan to address this in front of your interviewers/potential employer and how you plan to make up for such deficiencies.

Name Your File
Name your profile as “Profile(YourLastNameYourFirstName),” e.g., “Profile(SmithJohn).”
