SUMMARY OF CONTENT

Caregiving Diverse

Although many older adults maintain their independence, some older adults, especially those with chronic conditions may need assistance from others.  Often family members or friends may assume the role of caregivers for older adults.  The use of the term “caregiving” implies a wide range of activities.  Some caregivers provide minimal assistance such as transportation, shopping, or helping with finances or medications, while others may be providing even more assistance such as physical care such as bathing feeding, and have full responsibility for giving medications and other treatments.

This module includes a discussion regarding the common issues faced by all older adults and their caregivers (ie. living arrangements, driving, and planning for end of life decisions.  There is also content about evidence-based programs that are being used to help caregivers of older adults with dementia.
